Frequently asked questions:
Why can’t I smell my scented candle?
This one question tops the list! Many candle owners complain that they can’t smell the fragrance a candle in their room. To identify the problem we asked where and how long was the candle burning? The majority of our clients responded by admitting that they generally burned candles between fifteen-twenty minutes, in a large room, and because they didn’t smell the fragrance immediately, they extinguished the candle. First of all, you need to burn a scented candle for a minimum of two hours before judging the fragrance. Additionally, burn a candle in a small room and then check the fragrance
Why are soy candles more expensive than normal candles?
Soy candles are made of soy wax, which is a vegetable wax produced from the oil of soybeans. Soy wax is natural, biodegradable, has a strong scent throw and comparatively lasts for twice as long as the average paraffin wax candle. The natural properties in a premium quality soy candle is a little more expensive than an average scented candles but they are surely worth the price.
How long before my order ships?
We hand pour our candles, so please allow 3-5 days of processing and fulfillment before shipping for most orders. In the event that we have just made fresh product that you added to your order, than the fulfillment time before shipment will be less. This is just a general guideline and your order may ship sooner.
Is there a 'local pickup' option, if I am nearby and want to save on shipping charges?
Yes, if you live near Upper Marlboro, Maryland you can choose local. Your other option of course is to order online. Take advantage of our promotions and we can ship directly to you at a very fair price!
How can I keep my candles looking their best?
Candles will discolor or fade when they are exposed to intense light for extended periods. We do not recommend displaying your candles for long periods in direct sunlight, fluorescent lighting or other strong illumination. Wax will soften in temperatures over 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Store your candles in a cool, dry place.
What kind of Wax do you use?
In summary, we use multiple kinds of soy and coconut wax blends. See wax information for additional details
Do your wicks contain lead?
No, it is illegal.
What kind of Wicks do you use?
But in summary, we use multiple kinds of wicks depending on the item.
These include, CD wicks, HTP wicks, and wooden wicks. All have various purposes and benefits ranging from rigidity to keep the wick centered to soot and smoke resistant properties. We do not use ANY lead wicks. Lead wicks have also been banned in the U.S. for many years now.
Do I really need to trim the wick?
These are common instructions and good practices for any candle and are meant to prolong a candle’s burn time. A longer wick creates a larger flame, a larger flame melts the wax faster, and the wax melts faster than the wick burns away. So the longer your candle burns, the larger the flame gets, causing your candle to melt faster and faster. Keeping the wick trimmed and burning 4-5 hours at a time slows everything down so you get a longer burn time.
Additionally, burning your candle for 4-5 hours at a time ensures that the wax melts all the way to the edge of the container. The melted wax (not the flame) is what gives off your candle’s scent, so this will maximize your candle’s scent when lit. It will also prevent your candle from “tunneling”, or burning a hole down the center of the candle while leaving a ring of un-melted wax along the inside of the container.
What makes an all-natural soy wax candle different?
While paraffin wax is refined from crude oil, soy wax is made from soybeans- a completely renewable resource grown here in the US. Compared to paraffin, soy wax burns cleaner with no petrol-carbon soot. Soy wax also burns slower than paraffin, so soy wax candles also last longer.
Why do I sometimes get small puffs of smoke coming from my wick and flame?
This can happen for a couple of reasons. First, make sure to keep your wick trimmed properly as mentioned above. Secondly, constant or random drafts can cause puffs of smoke as well. For example, if your candle is next to a window, door, vent, etc. the drafts will interfere with the flame causing it to dance around and produce smoke. Also, if your candle is located in a place where people frequently walk right past it, this can cause puffs of smoke as well. Unless it is consistent, it’s nothing to worry about.
My candle is leaving lots of wax on the sides of the container after burning it. Why?
Each time you burn a candle, burn it until the wax pool reaches the edges of the container, even if it barely reaches. For most candles, that is about an hour for each inch in diameter of the container. On average this is around three to five (3-5) hours of burn time depending on the container. If you do not do this, your candle will get what's called a "memory burn" and it will start to burn down the middle leading to the tunneling effect.
There is a mushroom bloom head on my wick after burning? What is it?
A carbon buildup, otherwise known as a "mushroom" can happen with any kind of wick and wax. It is most common in highly fragranced candles as the fragrance oil travels up the wick while it burns. It is completely normal; however, it needs to be removed by trimming the wick before relighting as mentioned above. In a way, the mushroom head is a nice reminder that, "hey, I need to trim my wick". (Please remember to give the candle plenty of time to cool and harden before attempting to trim the wick as you do not want wick debris falling into the wax.
How can I avoid making the candle smoke when I extinguish the flame?
There are a couple of ways to do this. It’s important to note that you should try to AVOID BLOWING OUT THE FLAME as much as possible as this definitely does cause excessive smoke. It is also dangerous because you may inadvertently blow the melted wax out, as well. So what should you do? If you have a 'Wick Dipper', then that is ideal as it is a smokeless way to kill the flame.
Do you ship any day of the week including weekends?
We ship Monday- Friday, excluding holidays. During the summer and any other warm months, we only ship on Monday's through Thursday’s. This is by design and very common with candle retailers. You never want candles being exposed to heat longer than they have to be. Shipping at the end of the week presents the possibility of a candle being left in a warehouse or truck over the weekend. Neither of us wants that to happen. Due to the risk involved when ordering candles during hot months, we cannot be held liable for melted candles and other wax products. Even though we insure all of our shipments, melted wax is not covered by FedEx, USPS, etc.
Consider the following tips to avoid problems:
-
If deliveries to your home will be left on front porch (a bad thing during hot days), we recommend delivering to a place where someone will be present (.e a family members house or your place of employment).
-
If you are expecting a shipment at your home, try to plan to have someone there or at the very least, attempt to get the package inside to cool place as soon as possible so it is not sitting in the heat too long
-
Also, remember to place your order early in the week (during summer months) to help avoid packages being left in warehouses and trucks over the weekend.
Do you ship to PO boxes?
Yes, we can ship to PO boxes. As long as your PO box has room and accepts the delivery, it is no problem on our end.
How long does it usually take to ship and receive my products?
This depends a bit on the time of year. But we typically ship within 3-5 days (with the exception of the hot summer months which, in that case, it might take a couple extra days to ship so we can aim at shipping on a Monday - Thursday as noted above). We ship most of our items with Priority 2 day shipping, so you should typically expect to receive your purchase 2 or 3 business days after shipping.
What if an item is defective or damaged as it arrives?
Our goal is to provide customers with 100% satisfaction. If your product is damaged upon arrival, please send us a message via our "Contact Us" form on our website. Please retain the original packaging materials in case we need it returned to us.
What if I really don't like the fragrance I ordered? Can I return it?
Unfortunately, unless there is a candle defect, we do not offer exchanges based on personal fragrance preferences. Everyone has a different nose and preference so we hope you can understand that policy. However, remember that candles make great gifts and just because you are not fond of a scent, most likely a friend, co-worker, or family member might be. We would also suggest ordering wax melts, scent shots or samples to start. They are a cost effective way to sample new scents before buying!
Why does it say to discontinue using the candle when a half inch of wax remains in the bottom?
This is purely a safety measure which any candle maker or retailer will recommend. Glass gets hot on the bottom as the wick nears the base which can cause cracking, breaking, or damage underneath the glass. Additionally, we recommend burning all candles on heat resistant surfaces.
